APSL Emergency Response Update: Cyclone Ditwah Relief Efforts
APSL is actively coordinating with Sarvodaya and other trusted partners to deliver rapid, scalable relief to families affected by Cyclone Ditwah across Sri Lanka.
What We've Done So Far
Phase 1 (28 November)
Released: LKR 1,000,000
To Provide emergency care packs for children in Anuradhapura area. Distribution nearing 500 packs, including essential medications, dry rations, and other necessities.
Phase 2 (29 November)
Released: LKR 1,250,000
- To provide 2,000 cooked meal packs (each with water bottle) to displaced communities in Yakkala and Gampaha where rising water levels persist
- 3,000 sanitary packs for women and girls across multiple districts
Total Impact to Date
Reached: Over 4,000 individuals
with expenditures exceeding LKR 2.25 million
Phase 3 (01 December)
Released: LKR 2,500,000
To Support the renovation, cleaning, and restoration of five hospitals island-wide in collaboration with Sarvodaya. Agreed hospital restortions:
- Chilaw: 1 hospital
- Badulla: 2 hospitals
- Kandy: 1 hospital
- Mahiyanganaya: 1 hospital
Immediate actions include cleaning, sanitisation, reorganising facilities, and provision of temporary water storage until full water systems are restored.
Released: LKR 500,000
For cleaning equipment for Kochchikade, Negombo (approximately 3,000 submerged houses). Target: support around 270 households with essential cleaning kits. Distribution began on 02 December.
Total APSL Emergency Response Fund (to date):
LKR 4.75 million (GBP 12,176) released in four days.
Partnerships and Collaboration
Sarvodaya: Deep-ground network with close collaboration with government authorities and emergency response teams; integral to on-the-ground coordination.
Donors and Supporters:
- BVS Group - generously donated £5,000 which has enabled us to support the hospital restoration activities without delay.
- UK-based partners - Sri Lankan Quantity Surveyors Association UK & Ireland, Visakha Vidyalaya Old Girls' Association (UK), Bail Blast Ltd and Several Sri Lankan university student societies and many individual supporters
What's Next
Continue delivering phase-wise relief items to affected districts, prioritising the most severely impacted areas. Coordinate with local authorities and Sarvodaya to monitor needs, adapt distributions, and avoid gaps. Maintain transparency with donors and the public about funds utilized and impact achieved. Expand partnerships to diversify funding streams and accelerate recovery, including hospital restoration timelines and household clean-up operations
